Chapter 18
I woke disoriented, head throbbing. I tried to sit up, but the musty, dark room spun. With a moan, I lay back down. I closed my eyes, and as I did, memories flashed before me. I shivered, partly because it was cold, but mainly because of the realization of what had happened. Chris, my first love, and the man I truly thought I would marry, had deceived me. My stomach churned. Deceived wasnât a big enough word. Heâd served me up to certain death. I covered my face with my hands and cried. I wracked my brain, looking for some sort of logic as to why Chris would do this. Disheartened, I could not think of one single reason. Not one. How could I be so stupid? Obviously, he wasnât what I thought he was, and I had bought what he was selling hook, line, and sinker, without one ounce of hesitancy. What was wrong with me?
The sound of a key in a lock jerked me from my thoughts. Terrified, I scrambled to the opposite corner the sound came from, accidentally slamming my elbow into the wall. I winced and gingerly wrapped my hand around my throbbing elbow.
Light flooded the room, temporarily blinding me. I covered my eyes with my good arm.
âRise and shine, O.â An Essential Iâd never seen before said. âPut these on,â he added, tossing two shoes into the room. I scrambled to where the shoes landed and complied, wincing as I did. My feet were sore where the glass had cut them. âNow get up,â he barked. He didnât wait for me to comply. He crossed the room, grabbing my arm, pulling me to my feet. He shoved me toward the open door. Taken off guard, I stumbled and fell hard onto the cold cement floor.
âOh brother. Youâre a weak one arenât you? I have a feeling you wonât last long.â He stepped over me to the door, filling the frame. He reached around the open door and removed his keys from the lock they rested in.
âLast long? Are you taking me to Jinx?â I tried to sound brave, but his smile clearly said otherwise.
âMove.â He pointed down the hallway. I hesitated. If I could channel his energy, I could easily take him. He obviously underestimated me. But if he had friends just outside the door, they would quickly out-wield me. âYou donât want me to make you move O, and I wonât ask again.â
I stepped into the hallway, hoping it may give me some sort of idea where exactly I was. I crossed my fingers it was empty.
The hallway looked like the room Iâd just been in. There were no windows and the only light came from wall sconces that lined each wall. Every eight feet or so along both walls, there was a large metal door. The hallway was long. There were probably ten doors ahead of me, five on each side. I turned to see what was behind me, but the Essential shoved my shoulder, causing me to stumble again.
